What is the Mindful Breastfeeding Program?
It’s an Age Old Approach to a Modern Problem (a problem maternity services created).
Mindful Breastfeeding is the missing link to a less stressful, more fulfilling breastfeeding experience. It’s a mind/body evidence based approach that gives parents the tools to navigate the most stressful mental and physical transition of their adult lives.
Establishing breastfeeding can be difficult. Pain, feelings of overwhelm and exhaustion can make even the most dedicated new mom wonder if you will reach your breastfeeding goals. Most women are shocked at the level of overwhelm they feel and have no resources to cope.
Most breastfeeding preparation focuses on the benefits of breastfeeding, how breastfeeding works, how to latch baby on, nursing positions etc. All important information. But if it came down to knowledge only, most women would reach their breastfeeding goals. Something else is going on.
Why is establishing and continuing breastfeeding difficult for so many women today even with traditional preparation?
The answer has been right in front of us all along. It’s not just about your baby - it’s not just about your breasts - it’s about your brain.
Until now, most breastfeeding professionals haven’t had the knowledge themselves to help you mentally optimize your breastfeeding preparation. Most breastfeeding professionals have been focused only on the mechanics of breastfeeding - (breasts and baby).
Until now, most women haven’t had the information to understand and manage powerful negative thoughts and feelings that often come up in postpartum and derail breastfeeding.
Mindful Breastfeeding is the first program of it’s kind to help prepare you with the resources, mental flexibility and resilience to meet any challenges you face on your breastfeeding journey with self-compassion and self-kindness***
Complicated Positions Complicate Breastfeeding!
Traditional classes focus on teaching the typist position (sitting upright) causing pain and discomfort to mom and blunting baby’s instinctual feeding reflexes due to the effect of gravity. These positions can work great after the first 2-3 weeks - when you are feeling more recovered and your brain has come back on line (a little). Biological nurturing positions amplify YOUR maternal instincts as well as your baby’s innate feeding behaviors.
The Mindful Breastfeeding Program will help you to:
Reduce stress, anxiety and pain in those important early days when most moms feel overwhelmed.
Release your baby’s feeding reflexes making latching easier.
Optimize your comfort as you recover from birth while you and your baby get the hang of things.
Increase milk production as oxytocin triggers instinctual maternal behaviors. Trying to remember the 15 steps to a ‘proper’ latch and problem solving inhibits oxytocin release.
Protect and support your mental health - new research recommends mindfulness as a way to significantly reduce postpartum depression.
Reduce feelings of shame and sadness if your breastfeeding journey doesn’t go as expected and you decide to stop. (The skills and training to navigate the powerful emotions of postpartum are not taught in classes or most books).

*** Mindfulness and compassion skills are not hypnobirthing or relaxation skills - in the same way prenatal yoga is quite different to prenatal pilates. The Mindful Breastfeeding Program I have created takes a trauma informed approach and is based on evidence based mindfulness based interventions used around the world.
